DSL rollouts have increased 39 percent worldwide in the first nine months of 2004 to 85.3 million subscribers, according to new research from Point Topic for the DSL Forum.

In North America, DSL gained 3.5 million new subscribers in the first nine months of 2004 to reach 15.1 million. The U.S. added 3.2 million to reach 12.6 million. In Canada, DSL has 48 percent market share after adding 120,000 subscribers.

The Asia Pacific region added almost four million subscribers, with two countries reaching the DSL Forum¹s first stage target (20% of all phone lines) for a global mass-market for broadband DSL: South Korea (28.88%) and Taiwan (22.14%).

By February 2005 the number of DSL subscribers worldwide will reach 100 million, DSL Forum President Tom Starr predicts.
