Unixpac, an Australian provider of Linux-based servers, introduced on 12 October the Qube 3, the next release of the Cobalt Qube series by Cobalt Networks.

The Qube 3 is a versatile appliance that can perform a variety of functions such as Web serving, network file sharing, e-mail processing and can also be used as a firewall. Being integrated with applications and tools, the Qube 3 is ideally suited to small and medium-sized applications such as workgroups and educational institutions.

"The Qube 3 is an advanced generational leap," said Kelly Herrell, vice president of marketing, Cobalt Networks, Inc. "The Qube 3 presents new elements of value - a variety of applications, BlueLinQ (tm) technology, improved ease of use, better Internet connectivity, and higher reliability. The Qube 3 is designed to deliver network services for organisations while providing an opportunity for service providers and developers to vend layered services and applications directly to their customers."

There are many new features of the Qube 3, and increased ease of use was a priority for its development. The new software development is aimed at eliminating the technical aspects of setting up a server. Cobalt has integrated the administration functions into a user interface and has implemented an automatic configuration utility that sets up required services. The ability to automatically detect current network settings is also a feature. Other new components are Web-based e-mail, Web caching, Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet (PPPoE) support, X86-based processor as well as SCSI, USB and serial interface support.

The Cobalt Qube 3 can connect to the Internet a variety of ways, including an external modem, Digital Subscriber Line (DSL), cable modem or ISDN connection. Also, a leased line router can be shared.

In addition to the new software design, the Cube 3 also includes BlueLinQ, Cobalt's own application delivery system. It enables users to receive instant access to new services and product updates over the Internet as they become available. New software packages can be downloaded and automatically installed.

The Cobalt Cube 3 is available in Australia through the Unixpac (www.unixpac.com.au) reseller channel. The Qube 3 server appliance will be available October 23, 2000 and prices range from AUD$2490 to AUD$4990 including tax.
