Linux thin clients get a Trim

Schools, help-desks and call-centres are among the key target groups of a new Linux-based 'thin client' system launched by local open source outfit Cybersource.

Called TrimClient, the solution is a mix of workstation PCs and a system image server. The server provides application software to the desktop PCs, whereas the TrimClient workstations run most applications locally, but load those applications off the System Server.

The TrimClient system provides a server-based SafeIC environment, and this in-turn based on a highly customised Knoppix build, said Cybersource's product manager, Ron Fabre. "TrimClients are a Zero Administration Solution -- users cannot play around with any of the system or application software configurations," he said.

The TrimClients can run Web-based applications, Linux, Windows applications (through Terminal Services or Citrix ICA) and Unix (through X-Windows).

Fabre said a major drawcard to the TrimClients is in reduced maintenance and increased security.

He also said Cybersource had expressions of interests from several state correctional agencies and 30 independent schools.
