Early adopters of Novell's Nterprise Linux Services say the package lets them consolidate server operating systems and offers a smooth migration path to Linux from NetWare servers.

Even though all of Novell Inc.'s network services will not be ported to Linux until late this year, in our testing of the just-released NetWare 6.5, we found that Novell's preliminary open source add-ons are well integrated, complemented by Novell's mature eDirectory services and managed comprehensively by NetWare iManager 2.0.

Novell Wednesday said its NetWare 6.5 upgrade will ship Aug. 15 through resellers.

Novell Inc. this week made good on its promise to provide users with broader platform choices when running its network systems software by announcing plans to ship a product for Linux. It also announced comprehensive technical support and consulting services for Linux and said that systems vendors such as Dell Computer Corp., Hewlett-Packard Co. and IBM Corp. would offer its Linux products to customers.
