While perhaps best known as a major social networking site in the Web 2.0 vein, Facebook is becoming a popular place to interface with potential customers, similar to what companies such as Scribe and iLike have done. Facebook also is being viewed as a place for enterprise collaboration, with Serena Software leveraging the site for this purpose. To get perspective on Facebook, InfoWorld Editor at Large Paul Krill recently spoke with Aditya Agarwal, Facebook director of engineering. Agarwal formerly worked in the Oracle server technologies division.

As part of its planned hosted mashup service, Serena Software in August plans to highlight an upgrade to the Serena Mashup Composer tool that integrates Silverlight and Flash components as well as other media types.

Serena Software is licensing its Business Mashups software under Creative Commons licenses and encourages other software companies to do the same, Serena said.

The EclipseCon 2006 conference in California, this week will highlight Eclipse projects in ALM (application lifecycle management), as well as endeavors in rich-client technology, PHP (PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor), and VoIP.

The Eclipse Board of Directors, which guides the Eclipse open source development tools platform, on Wednesday announced four new members, which expands the board to 12 members.

As expected, the Eclipse open source tools project founded by IBM announced on Monday that it has been reorganized into a not-for-profit corporation and named the first members of its new board of directors.
