The disk encryption technology used to secure the data in your Windows, Apple and Linux laptops can be easily circumvented, according to new research out of Princeton University.

When nonprofit security site Attrition.org decided in late May to stop mirroring Web site defacements, the group blamed the volume of defacements and said their hobby had become a 'thankless chore.' On Thursday, members of Attrition gave a talk at the Black Hat Briefings conference in Las Vegas and dispensed hard-earned wisdom -- and some bitterness -- to those who might follow in their footsteps.

Hackers, computer security managers and law enforcement officials teamed up at this week's Black Hat Briefings conference to discuss their respective roles in securing the Internet and to urge attendees who engage in hacking activities to stay on the right side of the law.

Two servers for the instant messaging service ICQ were cracked Monday, defacing at least one Web page. America Online, which owns the ICQ instant messaging service, said the problem was quickly resolved and no user data was compromised.

Attrition.org, the nonprofit Internet security site that has long hosted copies, or mirrors, of hacked Web pages will no longer feature defaced sites, the group announced Monday in a statement on its Web site.

A group of malicious hackers have gone on a defacement spree last week, breaking into a string of corporate Web sites to replace text and graphics with digital graffiti.
